Still in Harmony at 106: Celebrating Perley's Eldest Resident, Norma

This month, Perley Health will be celebrating a remarkable milestone; resident Norma Beryl McKnight will turn 106 years old. Born in Ottawa on September 17, 1919, Norma has lived through more than a century of world events, cultural change, and family traditions. Through it all, one constant has remained- her love of music, which has coloured her life and touched everyone around her.

Norma was born the youngest daughter in a musical family of four children. While her parents (of British and Irish descent) filled their home with melodies, Norma's sisters played violin, her brother played saxophone, and her mother played piano. Norma herself had an extraordinary gift: while she could read music, she had an innate ability to play by ear, adding her own notes and flourishes that delighted her family and friends.

“She could light up a room when she sat down at the piano,” recalls her daughter, Wendy Nicklin. “She loved leading singsongs and never wanted people to just listen, she wanted them singing with her.”

Norma's childhood was also active. Though petite, she excelled in gymnastics, winning school trophies that her family treasures to this day. Sundays and church life played an important role in her upbringing, shaping the friendships, faith, and music that carried through her adult years.

As a young woman, Norma worked for a Deputy Minister during the Second World War. Those years were difficult, marked by the loss of friends and family members who never returned. Having also lived through the Depression, she and her peers learned to be practical and thrifty, counting every penny.

It was during this era that she met Arthur “Art” McKnight at the Rideau Lawn Tennis Club. Their connection was instant and enduring. Together, they built a warm family life grounded in love, also surrounded by music, and filled by their communities. After marrying, Norma shifted her focus to her home and family. She poured her energy into raising her children, Wendy and Don McKnight, while also volunteering in her church and in the community.

“She was always supportive of whatever Don or I wanted to pursue,” says Wendy. “Education, sports, raising our own children; Mom encouraged us without ever imposing her own expectations.”

Music continued to be the heartbeat of Norma's life. She sang in church choirs, accompanied sing-a-longs at gatherings, and inspired others to share their voices. Even as dementia gradually limited her ability to participate fully in activities, her family and the staff at Perley Health ensure she remains surrounded by the melodies she loves. Each Wednesday, a representative from her church visits Perley Health to play piano for Norma and others. It is a ritual that continues to nourishes her spirit.

“Even now, with her eyes closed most of the day, her hearing is excellent,” Wendy explains. “She listens to everything happening around her. Staff make sure she never misses musical events, because even if she doesn't actively respond, we know she is enjoying it.”

Norma's resilience has been a defining trait. She cared for her husband during his final years at home, a demanding and tender act of devotion. After his passing 22 years ago, she continued living independently for many years before moving to Perley Health in 2019.

Her longevity is not surprising to her family - several of Norma's aunts lived well past 100- but her children believe the love, care, and music that have surrounded her throughout her life have also played a role.

“She is gregarious, caring, and unselfish,” says Wendy. “She has always loved being around people, staying busy, and helping others.”

Norma's five grandchildren, now aged 32 - 44, are part of her enduring legacy. So, too, are the countless singsongs, family dinners, curling matches, and cottage summers that remain treasured memories.

For Wendy and Don, their birthday wish for their mother is clear, “Our wish is that Mom continues to remain comfortable and have quality of life, surrounded by love, and always with music close by. Mom, Norma, Nana; you are very special and loved by all of us.”

Happy Birthday, Norma!
