RNAO Best Practice Spotlight Organization

Through a competitive process, the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) selected Perley Health to become a Best Practice Spotlight Organization in 2016. By putting the latest research into practice, reducing variation in care, and eliminating interventions that have little effect, the initiative promises to further improve the quality of care delivered to residents of Perley Health and other long-term care facilities.

For Perley Health, doing the right thing means ensuring that Ottawa area Seniors and Veterans receive the highest standards of quality care. Achieving this requires excellent, resident-centered care that is based in research and a passionate team that says “yes” to evidence best practice.

BPSO is a quality improvement initiative created by the RNAO which is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. The program helps organizations to implement recommendations from evidenced based documents called Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs).  The goal is to develop, disseminate, and actively support the uptake of the BPGs as well as to evaluate their impact on residents, organizations and health system outcomes. Since 2003, this outstanding program has gained international attention and represents over 500 health-organizations across the globe.

We are currently implementing the following BPGs:

  1. Prevention of Fall and Fall Injuries in the in the Older Adult
  2. Risk Assessment and Prevention of Pressure Injuries
  3. Delirium, Dementia, and Depression in Older Adults.: Assessment and Care
  4.  Assessment and Management of Pain
  5. Risk Assessment and Prevention of Pressure Ulcers
  6. Developing and Sustaining Nursing Leadership
  7. Preventing & Addressing Abuse & Neglect of Older Adults: Person-Centred, Collaborative, System-Wide Approaches
  8. End-of-Life Care during the Last Days & Hours
