Honouring Courage and Friendship on Korean War Veterans Day at Perley Health

On Korean War Veterans Day, the day of the Korean War armistice, our community pauses to honour, remember, and reflect on the tremendous service and sacrifice of Canada's Armed Forces. Serving Canada's Veterans has been at the heart of Perley Health for more than 75 years. It is our privilege to welcome friends and community partners to celebrate and recognize the remarkable individuals who call Perley Health home.

Recently, the Games Room was filled with music and conversation as members from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Ottawa and the Korea Veterans Association Unit 7 visited to host a social gathering for Veterans.

The afternoon was a celebration of community and appreciation. Staff from the Embassy brought ice cream treats and filled the room with piano music. Members of Unit 7 presented gifts and shared a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion. The Monument to Canadian Fallen depicts a Canadian volunteer soldier with two children holding bouquets of maple leaves and the Korea's national flower.

The gathering also offered a to say thanks and farewell to Colonel Dongwon Lee, the outgoing Defence Attaché at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Ottawa. Over the years, we have valued Colonel Lee's visits and continued dedication to our resident Veterans.

Between 1950 and 1953, more than 26,000 Canadians served in the Korean War, making Canada the third-largest contributor to the multi-national force. The names of 516 Canadian heroes are forever recorded in the Korea Book of Remembrance, housed inside the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill.
