Celebrating Seniors Month: A reflection on living well at every age
Every June, Seniors Month gives us a chance to pause and recognize the older adults who have shaped our families, our communities and our country. At Perley Health, it is also a time to celebrate the Veterans and Seniors who continue to teach us what it means to live with courage, purpose and grace.
One of the most meaningful ways we do this is through Perley Health's Century Club, which honours residents who are 100 years of age or older. This year, 25 members of the Perley Health community are part of this remarkable group, including 14 Veterans.
Reaching 100 is extraordinary. But the real story is not the number itself. It is the life behind it.
The members of the Century Club have lived through decades of change. They have experienced moments of uncertainty and progress, service and sacrifice, work and family, grief and joy. They have contributed to their communities in ways both large and quiet. They have helped build the Canada we know today.
Seniors Month is an opportunity to honour that legacy. It is also a moment to think more deeply about what quality of life means as we age.
Connecting With Others
At Perley Health, quality of life is not defined by care alone. Excellent care is essential, but living well also means having chances to connect with others, take part in meaningful activities, remain curious, share stories, enjoy friendships and feel known as a whole person.
Those things matter at every stage of life. If anything, perhaps they matter even more as people age.
This is where the work of the Perley Health Foundation has such a direct and meaningful impact. Through the generosity of donors, the Foundation helps fund the programs, spaces, equipment, research and innovation that support a fuller quality of life for Veterans and Seniors across the Perley Health community.
In 2025, the Foundation transferred $2.3 million to Perley Health. That support is not abstract. It can be seen in the everyday experiences that help people feel engaged, supported and connected.
The Foundation helps fund the Active Seniors and Veterans Living Centre, where older adults can take part in affordable and accessible programs that support movement, creativity, mental wellness and social connection. These opportunities help Veterans and Seniors stay active, meet others, try new things and continue participating in community life.
Donor support also helps advance the work of the Centre of Excellence in Frailty-Informed Care™. Through which, Perley Health is contributing to research, education and knowledge sharing that can improve care and quality of life for Veterans and Seniors, both at Perley Health and beyond. This work helps bring research and practical experience together in ways that can strengthen support for older adults.
Bridging Generations
The Foundation also leads the Bridging Generations campaign, created to support intergenerational programs within the new Andrew Fleck Children's Services Intergenerational Early Learning Centre at Perley Health. Bringing children and older adults together creates moments of joy, connection and shared delight. It is a powerful example of how community can enrich life across generations.
For me, Seniors Month is a reminder that living well is something we create together. It depends on care, but also on belonging. It depends on safety and support, but also on purpose, dignity, friendship and the chance to keep contributing.
The Veterans and Seniors we celebrate this month have given so much over the course of their lives. Our responsibility is to ensure they continue to feel valued, respected and connected.
This Seniors Month, Perley Health celebrates the members of the Century Club and all the Veterans and Seniors who make this community so vibrant. At the Perley Health Foundation, we are proud to support the programs, research, spaces and experiences that help make quality of life part of every day.
