The music therapy team (Tim Cote and Patricia Deek) in collaboration with
the Centre of Excellence in Frailty-Informed Care™ (Atul Jaiswal, Michaela Adams, and David Mathew).
Invitation to participate: Record your heartbeat with a music therapist; Your heartbeat will be the
drums to the song of your making/choice*.
Participation is voluntary. Please talk to a member of the music therapy team to participate.
Purpose:
Heartbeat recordings are a meaningful way to craft a musical legacy for residents and their
family members or friends. It involves recording a person's heartbeat and breathing patterns, then using
these sounds to co-create or recreate musical pieces. It provides a way to express and create through
music and sound, to provide a memento in the form of a music recording.
Participation entails:
Participation entails meeting with music therapy team to have your heartbeat
recorded and selecting or writing a song. You will also have the option to participate in singing the song, or
recording yourself sharing a memory/story/message related to the song. Finally, you will have the option to
share the recording with your family or friends, as well as on our website if you wish to be featured.
Eligibility:
Currently, our program evaluation project is focused on engaging Veteran residents at
Perley Health. We plan to offer this service to all residents at Perley Health eventually. Participants will
be selected on a first come first serve basis, with priority given to Veterans, residents with a life limiting
illness, those nearing/or at end of life, and those experiencing sudden decline in health.

*Provided the songs mechanical rights are purchasable by research team. Songwriting is also possible for those who wish to create their own song with help from music therapist.
